Your stay in Corsica is comingand you're looking for places where you could admire an unusual Corsican landscape? What about discovering the sumptuous and imposing lion of Roccapina, cut in the rock, located between Sartene and Bonifacio in South Corsica?
This extraordinary rocky landscape will offer you a unique moment in Corsica!
Between Sartene and Bonifacio
Forget the e
mblematic cows, pigs and Corsican goats that roam the nature of the
Isle of Beauty. On the road between
Sartene and
Bonifacio, in
South Corsica, it is possible to come face to face with ... a lion!
Not as lively as the previously mentioned species,
the lion of Roccapina is actually a sculpture of pink granite.
Naturally forged by the spray, the wind and the rain, the rock dominating the
Roccapina cove looks like a lying lion, contemplating the
Mediterranean.
From its rocky outcrop, the
lion of Roccapina seems to watch wisely over the
Genoese tower of Roccapina, located in front of it, without forgetting the marvelous wild beach with turquoise waters lying below.
According to legend,
the lion is in fact a petrified man in the guise of the king of animals.
At the time of the Saracens, there was a great lord, handsome man, wearing long and tousled hair, who was nicknamed
the lion of Roccapina and who lived in the region, between the
bay of Figari and
Tizzano.
One day, while hunting, he met a young woman with whom he immediately fell in love. Unable to marry him, he invoked death and was petrified in the guise of a lion.
Note that it is possible to venture as close as possible to the
Roccapina lion, by choosing the hiking option.
Indeed, a walk offers the opportunity to go under the legs of the imposing statue. From this place, visitors can admire a dazzling panorama of the surroundings.
From
Bonifacio, in the south, to the
Campomoro peninsula and even the
Needles de Bavella, the postcard is worth the detour.
To do this, just follow the track leading to
Roccapina beach and then take the path towards the
Genoese tower called 'Capo di Roccapina'.
