The Corsica Open International Chess competition became one of the top international tournaments when it was founded in 1997. It attracts some 500 top players from 40 countries.

Chess tournaments are organized in the two cities of Ajaccio and Bastia.

The first stage is organized at the end of October in Ajaccio, at the Palais des Congrès..

The second stage is organized in the Théâtre de Bastia and is followed by the Corsica Masters.
At stake are trophies for the Corsica Masters itself, the Young Players' tournament, and the Blitz tournament. 

Chess for novices

Chess is played by two players on a chessboard made up of 64 alternate dark and light squares.. 16 white pieces are opposed to 16 black, arrayed in the first two rows of squares before the players on opposite sides of the board. The 8 pawns or foot soldiers stand guard over the 8 more powerful pieces behind them the King, Queen and a pair each of Bishops, Knights and Rooks (Castle).
The aim of this game of mental skill and pure strategy is to immobilise the King on the opposite side, a process known as checkmate.
